123 ARL Annual Salary Survey 2015–2016 12 These racial categories were first used by the Bureau of the Census in the 2000 decennial census.1 The purpose of the revised classification is to reflect the increasing diversity of the U.S. population that has resulted primarily from growth in immigration and in interracial marriages.
